The next day Danielle took Sparky to the park and the little girl was there, playing on the swings, her mother talking on her cellphone nearby. The girl scuffed her feet in the sand as she listlessly moved back and forth, not really swinging at all.

Danielle stopped, wishing there was something she could do. She didn’t think telling the girl her dog had survived would help—then the girl would just want her dog back and be sad all over again when she found out she couldn’t have it.

As she stood there, undecided, the little girl looked up and saw them. She jumped off the swing and ran towards them, but then stopped about five feet away.

“Can I pet your dog?” She glanced back to where her mother stood, her back turned to them.

“Sure. Here. Hold your palm out like this so he can sniff your hand first and get to know you.”

The girl stepped closer, took off her glove, and held her hand out, palm up like Danielle had shown her. She giggled when Sparky snuffled at her hand. “What’s he doing?”

“Probably thinks you have a treat. Here.” She handed the girl a treat to give him.

The minute he saw the treat, Sparky sat. As the girl hesitated, he shuffled closer, eyes fixed on the treat in her hand. She squealed and held it out, flinching away with the rest of her body. Sparky took the treat, swallowing it whole.

“Chew, Sparky,” Danielle admonished. He looked at her with his golden eyes, waiting for another one, not the least bit ashamed and she shook her head. So spoiled.

“I had a dog,” the little girl whispered as she patted his head.

“You did?”

“It was hit by a car.” A tear rolled down the little girl’s cheek, and she wiped it away with the back of her hand. “Mom says we can’t get another one. It was my fault. I left the gate open.”

Danielle’s heart almost broke. “Oh. I’m sorry.”

Sparky licked the little girl’s hands and face, and she giggled as she tried to protect herself from his kiss attack.

“Sparky. Stop.” She pulled him back, but he kept straining to reach the girl.

“That’s okay. I don’t mind.” She reached out her hand and he licked it again.

Danielle looked back and forth between the little girl and Sparky. It was the first time she’d ever heard the little girl laugh like that and Sparky’s tail was thumping the ground faster than she’d seen it move in ages.

“You know, Sparky and I come to the park most days. Maybe you could join us? What do you think? It won’t bring your dog back, but I think Sparky would like it. If that’s okay with your mom, of course. We’ll be here at the same time tomorrow.”

“Okay.” The girl flashed her a grin before skipping back to her mother who’d finished her call and was looking at them with a slight frown.

Danielle hoped the woman would agree. It wouldn’t be the same as giving the girl her dog back, but at least it was something.
